Eli and words

Eli has 7 teeth and says no words. He's 1 week shy of 16 months. It's interesting. My girls didn't start talking until they were 20-22 months old. Eli seems to be 2-3 months behind them so far (teeth/walking/crawling). I'm not really worried, but it's interesting to see what he can do. I think it's the things that he can do that make me not worry.

He can follow directions. Yesterday and today, he has carried the dog bowl full of food to Molly's crate, set it in the right spot, and then shut the crate door on her! He is feeding himself yogurt with a spoon right now--although he might turn out to be left handed. He seems to prefer his left to his right. Can I train him to use his right or is that an innate trait? I don't know. Anyways, I don't feed him at all. He picks up his food and feeds himself. I am very thankful for this. And he does communicate with sounds and grunts and lots of cries =) just not with words.

It's interesting to me to watch him grow up. I am constantly struck by the amazingness of how God created us!

I did use a few with Autumn and Sami, but try as I might with Eli, he won't do it! =) I have a friend who is having the same dilemma with her 3rd, also a boy. Her two older ones did, but her third won't. Her third does talk a lot more than Eli and it is intelligible--which I can't say for Eli.

I definitely can tell Eli understands, but he does not want to sign--he wants to say it his own way!

Did you sign a lot with your kids? If you did, are there any tricks you learned to help them do it?

Missing Pieces

The other day I was discussing a book with my mom and explaining to her my concern about how "blame" is cast upon the child in the story.  My mom commented about how deeply I read and consider what is written. listening or rather not listening to directions...

This week has been very eye opening. I am observing and noticing what I need to learn in order to be a better homeschooling mom and teacher and what my daughter needs to learn to be a good homeschooling student. My weakness when I was a teacher in a first grade classroom was not understanding how small concepts had to be broken down--and I lost my patience very quickly. This week, in particular today, I am seeing how detailed my directions need to be. I am going to be working very consciously and deliberately on this. On the other hand, I realized that my daughter does not listen! Wowsers! In a classroom, Autumn listens very well. She is a compliant child and very influenced by peer pressure and conformity. So, she listens along with everyone else and follows directions. But, at home, it's just Autumn and maybe Sami and Mommy. Very, very different! ESV, NIV, or NASB and then there's the ICB, ESV or NIrV...which should we read?

I am so thankful for my friend's question about the ESV vs. NASB and NIV. I couldn't remember the difference so I went to look it up. I knew that John Piper and Tim Keller, both pastors and authors that I deeply respect have switched over to the ESV. All of the churches that we have attended over the past few years PCA or Reformed Baptist have also switched to the ESV. I did find a blog that explained the differences and that helped me ( http://thefoolishgalatian.wordpress.com/2007/10/22/niv-vs-esv-and-why-piper-switched/ ) I knew why I didn't like the KJV--it was written in the days when writers were paid by a patron and that often slanted the translation. The NKJV, from what I understand, is a revision of the KJV that uses more modern language. Most churches I have attended used the NIV until the ESV came out.
